Sometimes, moving from one home to another is inevitable, and moving dates may not be flexible, even during a Pandemic. Leases expire, some have to relocate for work, among many other life scenarios, requiring you to move. 

So, if you have to move, how do you do it safely through the Coronavirus Pandemic? First of all, you can likely expect that moving services, truck rental companies, and storage units are still operating, with added precautionary measures. With that being said, you can expect just about the same procedures as normal, with more emphasis on ensuring you have a detailed plan for the move. Here’s what we suggest: 

  1. Contact Your Moving Services: Stay one step ahead and confirm your reservation for your moving service, truck rental, or storage unit, and discuss best practices for moving day. All of these companies are putting in added safeguards to help protect their clients, and it helps to be on the same page as them in terms of what is expected.
  2. Buy All Your Supplies In One Go: You are going to want to avoid making multiple trips, so it’s best if you get everything you need in one trip. Use a packing calculator to get an estimate on all of the box sizes, supplies, etc. you’ll need to collect before moving day. 
  3. Clean As You Pack: Moving is the opportune moment to disinfect all of your belongings. Before you pack them away, wipe them down with disinfecting wipes! 
  4. Finish Packing At Least 24 Hours Before Moving Day: Coronavirus can last a long time on surfaces, including up to 24 hours on cardboard boxes. Your movers will be wearing gloves, but for everyone’s safety, you should still have your boxes packed and sitting untouched at least a day before your movers arrive.
  5. Provide Hygiene For Movers: To aid your movers in following necessary hygiene practices, be sure to leave out products that they can use while they transport your items to and from the moving truck. That includes soap and paper towels by the sink, and hand sanitizer by the door that they’ll be entering and exiting through. 
  6. Don’t Use Free Or Recycled Moving Boxes: Now is not the time to use free or recycled boxes for your move. Boxes you already have in your home are fine, but as we mentioned before, Coronavirus can live on cardboard boxes for 24 hours, so it’s best if you use boxes that have not been previously used.
