Living in the DC Metro Area can sometimes feel like you’re being suffocated by the hustle and bustle that’s commonplace here. Throw in a pandemic and presidential election, and you might feel like you’re being smothered by everything that’s going on. The remedy? A quick weekend getaway in one of these amazing places that are right nearby.
1. Annapolis, Maryland: A seaside paradise that offers cobblestone roads with shops, restaurants, and stunning views of our Chesapeake Bay. Go on a sightseeing boat, or head down the coast for some top-tier fishing.
2. Assateague Island, Maryland: A wonderful getaway for campers, bikers, hikers, and families alike. This gorgeous little island has wild ponies running about! You can camp right on the beach, enjoy endless trails, etc., all without breaking the budget.
3. Rehobeth Beach, Delaware: We could have chosen any of the beaches down the Eastern Shore to mention on this list, but Rehobeth Beach is definitely one of the best and worth mentioning. This is a popular family location and a gorgeous place to relax and unwind.
4. Richmond, Virginia: Although a little further from our area, Richmond is rich with history, hiking trails, rivers, local brews, and outdoor adventure. What a great place to enjoy a change of scenery for a weekend!
5. Harpers Ferry, West Virginia: This is the exact place where Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia intersect, and it’s quite the spectacle. Harpers Ferry is a charming historic town, with views of a train ascending into a mountainside. Popular activities here include swimming, hiking the Appalachian trail, tubing, and more!
6. Shenandoah Park, Virginia: Most of us know about the beauty this national park offers, but when was the last time you visited? With fall foliage in its final peak, now is a great time to visit. Various wooded lodging options such as yurts are available, and the ones on Rose River Farm have stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
7. Ellicott City, Maryland: Step back in time and head to a little town that dates back to the 1700s. A beautiful river flows through this town but has been known to flood the city every so often. Shops, restaurants, and historical sites are stretched across the cobblestone streets, and it’s a bonus that it’s only an hour away!
