Happy first day of Autumn! Summer breezed right on by, and the chilly weather has already begun to settle in. Homeowners know what that means! It’s time to prep your house for all the wonderful (and sometimes pesky) things Autumn brings our way. Here’s your specially curated To-Do List:
1. First, you’ll want to clean your garage and properly store heavy machinery. When fuel sits in the gas tank, it can cause sediment to build up and ruin the equipment completely! Since Fall is likely when you’ll stop using these items, now is a good time to do this.
2. Checking your roof should be next on your list. Clean your gutters and continue to do so throughout this season. Don’t forget to replace shingles and take care of mold that might have shown up.
3. Remove your garden hose from the faucet to prevent cracking. Speaking of potentially busted pipes, make sure to drain your sprinkler system, if you have one, or you’ll end up with broken sprinkler heads and pipelines.
4. Call a professional to tune-up your furnace.
5. Prune plants when their summer growth cycle has ended and fertilize the soil.
6. Seal air leaks around your windows and doorframes before it’s too late and gets too chilly.
7. Bring your outdoor furniture inside. Yes, it is outdoor furniture, but instead of testing the label by leaving it outside in snowstorms and freezing temperatures, cover them up or store them in the garage!
8. Since tis’ the season to start cozying up by the fire, it’s time to inspect your chimney! The Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends that open masonry fireplaces be swept at 1/8″ of sooty buildup.
